US & Iran Close to Peace Deal? Trump Faces GOP Backlash

US & Iran Close to Peace Deal? Trump Faces Heat from His Own Party

Quick summary: After months of war, US and Iran are reportedly inching toward a 60-day truce. But Trump's Republican hawks are furious. Israel's Netanyahu is worried. And everyone's asking – what's actually in the deal?

US President Donald Trump and Iran nuclear deal negotiation concept

🕊️ What's the deal?

Word on the street (and by street I mean Axios and The Guardian) is that Trump is close to signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Iran. Pakistan is mediating. The main points:

  • 60-day ceasefire between US and Iran
  • Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz (huge for global oil)
  • US unlocks about $20 billion of Iran's frozen assets – most of it sitting in Qatar
  • Both sides agree to talk about Iran's nuclear program starting 5 June in Pakistan
  • Israel is supposed to stop bombing Lebanon

Trump posted on his social media platform saying an agreement is "largely negotiated" but he's not rushing. He also said the blockade on Iranian ports stays until everything is signed.

😤 But his own party is angry

Here's the twist. The same Republicans who cheered Trump bombing Iran are now calling this deal a disaster. Mike Pompeo (Trump's ex-Secretary of State) said it looks like Obama's old deal – "pay the IRGC to build weapons." Ouch.

Senator Ted Cruz said it would be a "disastrous mistake." Lindsey Graham warned it makes Iran the dominant power in the Gulf.

But here's the funny part. The White House communications director, Steven Cheung, straight up told Pompeo to "shut his stupid mouth" on X. Yeah. Real diplomacy.

🇮🇱 What about Israel?

Netanyahu is in a tough spot. He pushed hard for this war. Now Trump – his closest ally – is ending it. Israeli experts are calling this the "worst scenario" for Bibi. One analyst said it's a "capitulation."

Netanyahu still wants freedom to hit Hezbollah in Lebanon. But Iran says no – ceasefire must be on all fronts. And on Sunday, Israel was still striking Lebanon despite the supposed truce. Messy.

🤔 So who wins?

Honestly? Iran looks like it's getting a lot. Sanctions relief, money unlocked, and they keep control of the Strait of Hormuz. Their officials are already claiming victory.

The US gets an end to a war that was hurting the global economy and increasing inflation. But they didn't get regime change, didn't stop Iran's nuclear ambitions completely, and didn't remove the IRGC.

Trump says his deal is "THE EXACT OPPOSITE" of Obama's. But critics say it's basically the same – just with more bombs in between.

🎯 My two cents (just a blogger talking)

Look, war is bad. Any deal that stops people from dying is probably a good thing. But watching Republicans who cheered for bombing now cry about diplomacy is... interesting. Also, poor Netanyahu. He bet everything on this war and now he's getting sidelined.

Let's see if Iran's supreme leader actually signs off. And if Israel finds a way to keep fighting anyway. This isn't over.

📌 Bottom line

US and Iran are closer than ever to a ceasefire. Trump faces GOP backlash. Israel feels betrayed. And the Strait of Hormuz might reopen soon. Stay tuned – the next 60 days will be wild.
